Versatile Hunter Posted February 3 Posted February 3 (edited) Does anybody have experience with Montana Knife Company? Thinking about pulling the trigger but some of the reviews on their website are mixed. Edited February 3 by Versatile Hunter
dbHunterNY Posted February 3 Posted February 3 (edited) F***&&&^. @Versatile Hunter I unfortunately (for my wallet) have many. I can help a lot to get a drop and with feedback on many models I have or have had. The real question is what you'll be using it for and if you're a guy that likes bigger knives or smaller ones? 50/50 option is steel to start 52100 (black blades, non-cerakoted) are slightly easier to sharpen but are parkerized carbon steel and need more care to not rust. Magnacut is there stainless and works awesome. holds an edge a little longer, not quite as tough, is pretty dang corrosion resistant, but still very easy to sharpen to shaving sharp. dbHunterNY Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I edc the original mini speedgoat in magnacut steel all the time and use it for Field dressing anything from small game, to turkey, and deer. It's on me right now in the office. Lawdwaz, Versatile Hunter and grampy 3
dbHunterNY Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Some wash the paracord knives when you get them bloody or dirty but I honestly just rewrap them. They're otherwise pretty gross but the mini is less than 2oz and fits in a pocket. The 2.0 version now is nicer as it has a finger guard that keeps you from riding up to the sharpened edge.
dbHunterNY Posted February 4 Posted February 4 There's some still in stock from other drops but the whitetail knife drops Thursday. If you're interested in that sign up for text and email notifications. Then setup Shops app with your mkc account and a credit card. 2 hrs before youll get a text alert for the drop with a website link. Open the mkc texted link and see if Shops app is setup (button to click as a pay option will be there.) Half a minute prior to 9pm get to the page you want for the knife and color that's going to drop and keep refreshing the page. Add to cart and check out. Don't look for items with knife sitting in your cart. It'll become unavailable and get pulled from your cart if it sells out while you're screwing around. You'll be able to get a drop within 5 seconds and won't miss out. Some knives and colors sell out in well under a minute but you'll be fine. Kayak Ken 1
dbHunterNY Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I have the whitetail knife too if you want a particular pic of part of it or have a specific question about it.
Belo Posted February 4 Posted February 4 have had no interest in a company that just does "drops". It's not a f'n sneaker lol. But I've heard they're bad ass just probably overpriced because of how they sell. Hats off to their marketing though. Hats off to their marketing though. i've had and still have knives from other higher end manufacturers like Benchmade. IMO i like these better and the designs are more functionally thought out. they work with others that professionally use the knives for each purpose. they are a little bougie by nature of being american made, age structure of staff, marketing tactics, but very down to earth company. smaller than others but growing to try and meet the demand. they're only drops because the supply they can make sell out fast. people would and still get pissed because there isn't a selection available 24/7 on the website. prices haven't increased with popularity from what I've seen. I guess don't knock them until you try them. lol I mean shit if I can take a skinning knife and baton the thing through a 2x4 to cut it in half and then shave my arm with it, is it worth more to you? i mean are you still gonna be a cheap SOB and think it should be even closer to the cost of a chinese blade made by little wang ping that might break in half (referencing a new Buckmaster logo'd Buck knife I once had that i refused to send back for a free replacement). that MKC stonewall skinner i stopped keeping as sharp as i could get it with a basic field sharpener because it cut through hide too easily when skinning stuff out.

I listened to the whole meateater podcast with their owner and he's impressive for sure. Just not my thing. Take the "Buy and plant stuff and then hunt private land" Challenge!

Just not my thing. at the same time i don't mean to be pitching their products like a billboard either. they're just great knives. I loved my other Benchmade knives and what not but I just like these better. I can sell them for what I paid for them if I didn't. I have sold several too that i wasn't in love with due to design and/or ergonomics after I got my hands on them.
Versatile Hunter Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 Hey man, this is great, thanks! I have a Benchmade Osborne in magnacut and I really like that steel. I had been eyeing the saddle mountain skinner, a larger blade, and when the whitetail came online I was thinking of going with that instead as it comes in magnacut.

My everyday carry is a kershaw because it's like my 4th one as I somehow tend to misplace them. My filet knives and skinning knives aren't phenomenal either, but it's on my list to get a few solid, well made blades that hold their edge. Every time I think to do it though I find something else I'd rather have for $400 lol. Take the "Buy and plant stuff and then hunt private land" Challenge!

I read they're expanding and will begin carrying larger inventory. The reviews that raised a red flag were uneven bevels and cut marks on the back side of the blade. None of these things are deal breakers, but if they're pitching higher end you hate to hear about suspect quality control.

None of these things are deal breakers, but if they're pitching higher end you hate to hear about suspect quality control. the uneven bevels are due to growing pains of having new employees and each blade is hand sharpened on a grinding wheel. with their generations program send it back at any time and they'll sharpen it or fix it for free. the cut marks on the spine are from initial cutting of the steel into knife blanks. honestly i and others have said that there's a preference to not want it perfectly mirror polished. it gives you some needed traction despite there is some jimping on the spine. the quality is pretty good. some are collectors that want safe queens so i do get the gripe. I'll take a picture of some of my whitetail that's the one coming up when i get home. Lawdwaz and Versatile Hunter 1 1
