Lawdwaz Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Starting 1/1/2025 the new law went into effect. You legal? I’m not……….yet. My boss took it online and it did take 8 hours and then had to take a test. He passed so I think I shouldn’t have a problem…. grampy 1
DoubleDose Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Recommend getting the icon/symbol added to your NYS drivers license rather than having another license to carry. Robhuntandfish, Nomad, PraiseDiana and 1 other 3 1

Far more information than you will ever retain or use unless your going to appear on "Deadliest Catch". And far too much info on nautical bathrooms. Lol As double dose said get the anchor icon on your drivers license. "it's pointless for humans to paint scenes of nature when they can go outside and stand in it"- Ron Swanson
Nomad Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I took a course in 8th grade , so 1973 ? Our daughter took it years back as we had a boat . My buddy was a Deputy on the local Sheriffs dept Marine Unit and taught the class , he drove her to the class, as I was working . She passed , and I never got stopped on the Bay . I used a manikin as my spotter when I skied , he said “ is that your spotter!” I said she’s over ten years of age ,he said ski at the south end and I won’t go there . Ncountry 1

It’s a very little concern , they’re lucky I buy a hunting license. Went 40 years without getting a car inspected, no building , or pool permits . cervidchasers 1

Moho81 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 So it has to have a motor to need this license? A kayak with paddles does not need the license Robhuntandfish and Lawdwaz 1 1

I have only ever been a passenger of a boat. I could not tell you a single thing about what any of those buoys or markers mean on the water. I 100% would F*%^ something up first time on the water without a course so I don't see how its really a bad thing.

Oh I agree. I've been on a boat and owned a boat long ago to know what I'm doing. I guess in general, it's the thought of taking a 8 hr course that as mentioned, has information I'm never going to use or need.
Buckmaster7600 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I hate being told what to do by the government but I put 400-500hrs a year on my boat engines and have seen a lot of idiots and had many close calls. Of course the state made the course ridiculous from what others say but having a bit of knowledge before going on the water isn’t a bad idea. Bolt Action, Moho81, grampy and 2 others 1 4

Also wonder about liability issues if a passenger or someone else gets hurt and the boat operator is not licensed. Maybe even insurance policies start to require the boat operator be licensed. A lot of people dont know this and just think they can pound drinks all day out there without risk.
