Doebuck1234 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Here we go again!Figured I'd get this started as the weather sucks and trying to kick the cabin fever.Started my germination last year way too early so holding off for another 2-3 weeks. With as crappy as this winter has been not sure that's long enough!Anything new on the agenda for the growing season? corydd7 and 9jNYstarkOH 2
corydd7 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I waited hoping somebody would start this. Nothing much new for me but i always start a couple new things. I might start pepper seeds Thursday. crappyice Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I'd like to do a variety of potato again this year and need to start my jalapeño peppers soon. My father in law gave me 4 diffent varieties of tomato seeds to start. I have one of those black compost bins in my garden area that seems to be rock solid ice of veggie scraps up top this year. Hoping that the stuff toward the bottom is actual compost corydd7 1
Redneck4Life Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I'll be starting vegetables and flowers from seeds this year pretty soon. I got my front porch that gets sun all day long maybe some heat lamps and crank base board heat out there should help. I've started before but lost all my plants when I put them on my deck they got fried. I won't do that this year. Good luck everyone. Hopefully I can keep the deer out of my garden this year. Stubborn1vt Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Anyone have experience growing sweet potatoes? I know they will grow in zone 5a, but they need to started in a greenhouse. Just curious if anyone has hands-on experience with them. Worth it?

They're super expensive on the website i buy from so i passed. Seems a little complicated to start them but definitely doable. Edited February 27 by corydd7 Stubborn1vt 1

My FIL will do starts in a small greenhouse. Maybe I can get him to start some for me. 25 slips would be a whole bunch. I think I would try maybe 10 to start with. Then again, sweet taters aren't that expensive at the grocery store.
mowin Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Those who plant garlic... Do you remove the straw or mulch? If so when? Do you wait for the plant to emerge through the mulch?
corydd7 Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Don't remove the straw or mulch, it will grow right threw and the mulch suppresses the weeds. mowin, Water Rat and Pygmy 1 1 1
corydd7 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Well took 17 days but finally i have germination! I switched my seed starting area from my barn to basement and was batting 0-50 until today.
