He was basically a home run hitter with a lot of whiffs. He might have the greatest 50 yard run you've ever seen but he'd give them a bunch of runs for losses. Instead of taking a hole for that 2-5 yard gain he'd spin and look for the home run. In his day I would take Emmit Smith or Walter Payton all day. He so often left them at 3rd and long that it actually hamstrung their offense. Exiting yes, effective no. Gimme the Bus and a solid 5 Everytime. Emmit had a few huge years behind one of the best lines ever, but career wise longevity is what led to his record breaking stats. What Barry did in 10 years was insane- all pro first or second team all 10 years on bad teams. Career average of 5 yards per carry is nuts. Only 2 guys IIRC have higher for career (Jim Brown and my chiefs boy Jamaal Charles). Water Rat 1

And I wasn't picking top 5 just guys in his era I would rather have built my team on. For sure he was incredible. But I remember watching all those games and a normal series of plays in a 7 play drive would be Sanders for 8, sanders loss of 6, pass for a FD, Sanders for 30 for a FD, Sanders loss of 2, Sanders loss of 3, 3rd and long pass , punt. He was amazing to watch but a home run back. He also leads the league all time in lost yards at 1,1114 and also plays of no gain with a shortened career. He was an incredible watch but hard to build/plan your offense around. He reminds me of Sammy Sosa. Fun to watch but only gonna strike out or hit a home run. Lots of backs I would choose over him for a championship but none that I would chose over him to watch in a game.
