Since we have some NJ influence here I figure I’ll get a question answered.

NJ seems to have a 6 day “fire arms” season.

What firearms exactly can I hunt with during this season? Can I use my 30/30? I may have secured some access out by hackettstown

Also from the NY perspective are we fortunate or is it a detriment that we have such a long gun season compared to our neighbors

No rifles for deer in NJ.

Shotguns, muzzleloaders or archery gear can all be used. Slug guns must have a scope or adjustable sights. NJ allows us to “shoot down” with weapon type, so we can bow hunt our gun season and use our gun tags.

I’m thinking of working to convince our Division of Fish & Wildlife to consider allowing us to use straightwalled cartridges like other densely populated states allow. Better accuracy and less recoil. Slug guns rattle your teeth.

So like 44mag lever actions and such that would be cool. My friend who hunts in NH was allowed to use straight walled this year and will thrilled.

I guess it will be muzzle loader for me as I don’t own a slug gun

Chef  let me know if you’re down this way. Hackettstown is the town west of me. I can help steer you to whatever you might need.

Thanks man that would be awesome. My hunting partner has a decent sized property down there. I may even try baiting just to see what it’s like

A lot of NJ hunters use Muzzleloaders over slug guns. More accurate, shoot farther, and less kick.

And I’m buying the beer. Check out Czigmeister brewery and Man Skirt brewery. Both in Hackettstown.

If I come down for a few days we should for sure go out for a few beers

A lot of NY has recently converted from shotgun only to allowing rifle and accidentally shootings have decreased in those areas allowing rifles.

I’m sure if you look hard enough you can find enough studies and info to back your case up.

I just  recently worked with a few friends to try and change a law in NY. It’s a lengthy process and required a lot of research and the ability to write up a resolution in a legal like manor but now our resolution is headed to the state legislature.

If it goes through and we get the law changed it will feel so rewarding. So I encourage you to do it.

I started with talking to our local sportsmen’s federation and went from there. I’m sure NJ is totally different in process but if you want I could walk you though the steps we had to go through.

Bow season is September through January with unlimited deer per day.  There's no reason to buy a gun license.
The only day that you can't bow hunt is Christmas.  I haven't gun hunter since last century.

Also a cross bow is a bow in NJ correct ?

Thanks for the support. I’m someone with a history of getting fishing and hunting regulations changed. That’s an area I’ve been active in for a long time. I have always had our Directors’ cell phones and enjoy a close working relationship with that agency. We bring in our Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs, NJ Outdoor Alliance, and individual hunters to help engage our Fish & Game Council to make changes.

Doesn’t nj require a plug also for shotgun no more than 3 rounds?

Yes. The exception is early fall Canada goose season. Those are non migratory geese targeted for big reductions in their numbers.

Quick funny story: I was grouse and woodcock hunting with a buddy on State Park land. A Park Ranger stopped us to check our licenses and “to make sure our guns were plugged”. We both had side by side shotguns. :)
