Contest Rules

1. NY Birds only. Must be taken with a gun, bow, or crossbow.

2. All NYDEC laws in effect.

3. Limit ONE bird per contestant.  However, you may upgrade to a larger bird during the course of the season if you harvest a higher scoring bird.

4. You must report all turkeys in the contest entries topic with the following requirements:

  • Your entry must include a picture of you with the turkey
  • Your entry must include all of the turkey's beard lengths and pictures of each beard length
  • Your entry must include both of the turkey's spur lengths and pictures of each spur length
  • Your entry must include the spur and beard scoring portions of the NWTF score (https://www.nwtf.org/the-lifestyle/turkey-records-home)

NWTF reference for measuring:

Spur measuring:

Measure each spur. Spurs must be measured along the outside center, from the point at which the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur. Add both spur measurements and multiply the combined length of the spurs by 10. This is the number of points you receive for the turkey’s spurs.

Beard measuring:

Measure the beard length (a beard must be measured from the center point of the protrusion of the skin to the tip) and convert it to decimal form.

Next, multiply the beard length figure by 2; this is the number of points you receive for the beard length. If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), measure each beard, convert them to a decimal number, then add those figures together and multiply by two. This is the number of points you receive for your turkey’s beards.

5. Scores will be the total of the NWTF scoring portions for spur and beard measurements

6. Team Contest signup period ends at 9:00PM on Tuesday April 30th, 2024 which is the day before the Adult opening day on May 1st, 2024.

7. Teams will be randomly drawn.  Exception for Parent/Child being together on the same Team

8. Individual Contest signup period is open for entire season, however entries will be valid only for birds taken after entering the contest!

9. Contest runs the entire legal NY spring gobbler season.  All birds must be entered within 7 days after the end of the spring gobbler season.

One note, I did add an entry fee to the Adult Individual contest this year, which is what we've always had on the NJ site as there was a preference there to have a separate prize pool for it (same thing we do with the Deer contest too).  If there's a strong preference to not have an entry fee, we can shift to that.
