Brookies on the fly

Mount Washington in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This was our first annual Northeast Rendezvous for Native Fish Coalition and we all had a great trip. The natives were behind most every rock in the rivers and streams and were cooperative. Wild brookies often live in fairly sterile streams without big hatches to feed on, so they are opportunistic feeders. My two biggest catching flies were a Mickey Fin streamer and a yellow Humpy dry fly. I caught a bunch on the dropper when fishing the Humpy, and those were mostly a variety of wet flies.

We had pretty good weather after Friday’s rain and we found a great swimming hole to cool off in. I managed two small, wild rainbows and raised one big brown that wouldn’t chew. Love the colors of our brook trout!

Looks like you had a great time. Much not have had much rain up there. All the creeks around us are murky.

The rivers and streams were all high for this time of year, but there is so little sediment in these waters that they run clear even when raging.

Makes sense.  The kinderhook is still murky, but it's receding since all the rain.  Still too high to bring the dogs for a swim.

Nothing like a brookie.    Hoping to get out for a day in Sept at a stream I've been eyeing.

Good luck!

For those wondering, these are tributaries to the Adroscoggin.  Didn’t see another angler in four days other than those I fished with each day. We took turns working the water with three different methods to cover all the water. Fun days!
