How come some threads have circles and some have stars and some have nothing? Silly question

Stars mean you have posted in that thread.  

Green circle means there is new posts you have not saw, in a thread you have not posted in.

 No star or circle means you have saw every post in the thread and you have not posted in it.  

Green star means you have posted in the thread, and there is a new post you have not saw.

Hopefully that makes sense, and is accurate lol

I believe the star is to let you know there has been a new post since you last viewed the thread.

I think a star means you have posted/contributed in that thread.  Bold font of the title means there are new posts since your last visit, regular font means you have read all posts in that thread.
