Ammo Search

Since the new laws went into effect September 13th I have transferred a shotgun gun from a private sale at a FFL, purchased a new shotgun and shipped ammo to a FFL all under the new System with the NYS troopers.

At each transfer I was ready to be delayed at the very least or denied although it has never happened to me in the past. All three transfers and background checks went thru with no issues just as fast as before.

Not that I support the new system, I don’t, but I was ready to rant and rave but everything went smoothly. I know that is not everyone’s experience.

I was in the company of several local politicians last week and they had no idea these background checks were required for ammo. You have to write your local representative’s and explain what is going on. Don’t take for granted that they know what is happening.

Same here, not a single  problem with a gun or ammo purchase anywhere.

I will not buy from Cabela's again though. It took three people and a half hour to do the background check for two boxes of ammo. Two older guys got a bit pricky as they saw I was beginning to become annoyed with their process. When they asked for all of my information for the THIRD time, I asked why, no one else does this three times.  They gave me some crap about small shops are not doing it right and cutting corners, "we do it correctly".  A younger guy walked over to me and quietly said "its corporate... Cabelas is keeping records and tracking all of this on their own, not part of the State laws". So, two additional copies of your very detailed information and purchases are going somewhere else other than NYS when you buy at Cabelas.  No thanks.

Interesting, the place I’ve recently bought ammo, has you fill out an info form , then they enter that info into a computer, after which the form you fill out is shredded. While I wouldn’t call the process fast by any ,means it was complete in a few minutes .

The uniformed cop that was there was waiting the whole time I shopped , talked with one of our arson guys and made my purchase, it’s a crap shoot .

Im set for a lifetime , and will add to that in Fla. But I found 35Rem there my buddy needed my only purchase here .

The scary part is they can stop all ammo purchases across the state by pulling a plug .

@TimberGhost well i was the first ass with an assumption. Glad to hear the process is feasible there.

No it’s not you. During the hunting season I stopped at a small shop and the owner told me that every check he tried that day was delayed or denied. I think it was 10-12 attempts.

This was the Friday before gun opener. And no one got their ammo. Now I understand you should not wait until the day before but some people have very busy lives and limited time. The .gov should not the cause of people not being able to hunt.

i mean i assumed he lived and got ammo shipped to NY. i tested the new system twice and it was instant proceed. i'm sure it's like playing at the casino, odds are it's only a matter of time before i get denied.
