I've been dumbfounded at how some guys in the field or at the rifle range handle firearms. I've had loaded rifles pointed at my legs and looked down more gun barrels than I care to remember. Flame away but I'm all for mandatory gun handling training

Living in NJ and having taken Hunter Education classes for myself and in taking friends and family through those courses, safe gun handling is pushed hard here. I’m thinking New York has the same?  We can’t get our hunting license without successfully passing a Hunter Ed class.

Yes, our hunter Ed course does cover gun safety over and over.

While I like the convenience of the entire online hunter Ed courses, I feel a lot of the emphasis of proper gun handling and safety is not the same as in person.

I know that when we teach Hunter Ed, we drill gun safety hard, even going so far as having the students carry an inert gun (basically a dummy gun) around for hours to ensure they get practice with muzzle control. This in addition to our field exercises like how to cross a fence with a firearm or how to pass a firearm to another person.  I know they are missing that hands-on piece with the online course.

Here in NJ, all students are still required to do a field walk which is when safe gun handling and things like tree stand safety are done. Students carry a plastic gun at times during the field walk and are required to treat it like a real gun that is loaded. That’s above and beyond any online written test.

I like this method. NY started the fully online during COVID. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the amount of wives and kids that now have hunting license because hubby/dad took the course for them, just to get there tags.  Only DMP tags can be signed over to someone else, and only two per yr.

Plenty of wives that never hunted a day in there lives, have taken some nice bucks.

I’ve heard that as well. We can’t do that here. Tags are all non transferable. And even through Covid, our Hunter Ed program required in person for part of the course.

One Word = Complacency

Punishment should be left up to immediate family

firearms are machines no different than the vehicles we drive and they are all prone to failure in one regard or another . Where that barrel is pointed at all times is your major concern, because the law of averages sooner or later will run against you.  I was told many years ago during my Hunter safety course at 14 years old ‘ look around , who do you see in this room ??? Family and Friends …. That’s who you will kill or hurt should things go side ways’  I never forgot that .

Be safe fellas , take your time and remember it’s not that important to kill a deer , be sure of your target and Beyond
